SAN ANTONIO , Texas - San Antonio Food Bank welcomes a $4,500 donation from the Woodforest Charitable Foundation.  The grant will provide funding for its Kids Café and BackPack programs.

Sixty-five percent of the people in southwest Texas requesting emergency food assistance have children.  Woodforest Charitable Foundation is partnering with the San Antonio Food Bank in response to this need.

The San Antonio Food Bank is a non-profit organization that serves as a clearinghouse by receiving and storing truckloads of donated food, produce, and other grocery products.  The Food Bank distributes these items to approximately 440 service agencies throughout 16 counties in southwest Texas.

The Food Bank helps fight childhood hunger by supporting its Kids Café and BackPack programs.  Kids Café programs provide free meals and snacks to low-income children through a variety of existing community locations such as after school programs and churches.  In addition to providing meals to hungry kids, Kids Café programs offer a safe place, where under the supervision of trustworthy staff, a child can get involved in educational, recreational and social activities.

The San Antonio Food Bank currently partners with dozens of schools to provide food for children at-risk of going hungry over a weekend or holiday.  The Food Bank’s BackPack program distributes food packs to children who are identified by teachers and staff members as showing signs that he or she is living in a high-risk situation. On Monday, students are required to return the backpacks so that they can be filled again and carried home the following week.
