AUSTIN, TX – Capital Area Food Bank of Texas receives a $4,540 gift from Woodforest Charitable Foundation.

In 1981, a small group of concerned Austinites from the United Urban Council and individuals from several community organizations formed the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, Inc. They recognized the need for emergency food assistance as well as the availability of surplus food from various food companies and grocery stores that might otherwise go to waste.

The Capital Area Food Bank of Texas provides food and grocery products to more than 300 Partner Agencies in 21 Central Texas counties. In Fiscal Year 2010-11, the Food Bank provided more than 24 million pounds of food in a service area covers 19,064 square miles in Central Texas. The mission of the Capital Area Food Bank is to nourish hungry people and lead the community in ending hunger.

Many Austin area children in low-income families do not receive well-balanced evening meals because their caregivers work late hours or cannot afford nutritious food. Children require appropriate nutrition in order to develop properly and perform well in school.

Kids Cafe, an official program of Feeding America, serves as a direct partnership between the Capital Area Food Bank and existing after-school programs. There are more than 1,600 locally operated Kids Cafes across the nation. In FY2011, the Food Bank served more than 33,500 meals to an average of 3,300 children per month. Kids Cafes are safe, nurturing places where neighborhood children can go after school and receive a hot dinner, as well as help with homework from caring individuals.

“Gifts like yours assure me that our community is up to the challenges before us this next year. Through your support, we will work together to nourish hungry people and lead the community in ending hunger,” said Hank Perret, President & CEO of Capital Area Food Bank of Texas.
