TYLER, TX – Woodforest Charitable Foundation makes a $12,860 donation to East Texas Food Bank.

Founded in 1988, the mission of the East Texas Food Bank is to reduce hunger by providing food, support and education to individuals in need.  The Food Bank currently provides food to over 200 partner agencies, in an effort to feed children, the working poor and seniors throughout 26 counties in East Texas. In 2011, 18 million pounds of food was distributed to hungry East Texans, equaling 15 million meals. In the Food Bank’s Service are, one in four children, one in five adults and one in seven seniors are at-risk of hunger.

As a clearinghouse for donated food, the East Texas Food Bank forms a partnership with the food industry by collecting, inspecting, sorting, packaging and distributing food to member agencies, which provide food directly to those in need. Food sources include a variety of food manufacturers, brokers, wholesalers, and retailers that donate food to the East Texas Food Bank. Donated food includes overproduced or discontinued items, frozen foods, dairy products, mislabeled goods, dented cans, day-old breads and pastries, and odd-sized produce. In addition, local farmers and gardeners provide fresh produce. Individuals, businesses and community organizations support the East Texas Food Bank through various canned food drives throughout the year.

In addition to food distribution, the East Texas Food Bank provides food for over 4,500 children in 17 counties. In the 2011-2012 school year, over 130,000 backpack were distributed. Children also receive food for extended holidays and school vacations. Backpacks filled with nutritious, kid-friendly foods are discreetly distributed to children before the weekend of holiday break.

“We commend your commitment to making an effective and positive change in the communities your serve, and your passion for enriching the lives of those who are in need. You are truly a friend to the hungry. On behalf of all the children, seniors and families we serve, thank you,” said Dennis Cullinane, Executive Director of East Texas Food Bank.
