Conroe, TX – Woodforest Charitable Foundation recently presented a $2,500 donation to the Conroe Family YMCA. In 2007, the Conroe Family YMCA, Willis Independent School District and the City of Willis’ Community Development Corporation entered into a partnership arrangement to enhance after-school programming by providing positive, fun, creative, community beneficial activities in a safe, caring environment. The Willis Teen Center was created to help raise young teens in a loving and productive manner. Over the course of the 2011-2012 school year, the YMCA – Willis Teen Center averaged 35 unduplicated teens each day, every week for a 36-week time period. The Willis Teen Center provides opportunities for teens to develop the self-esteem needed to change their social and cultural mindset. The teens are impacted by being provided with a nurturing atmosphere where then can interact with peers and positive role models and engage in activities that help them think critically. The main objective of The Willis Teen Center is to provide educational opportunities for teens to develop skills that help them grow intellectually and succeed in today’s workplace. The skills taught include: communication, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, and leadership. The Willis Teen Center is closed during summer months, however through support from donors, children that regularly attend the after school program center, are allowed to attend the Conroe Family YMCA summer camp free of charge. Willis ISD buses transport the teens to and from the YMCA campus each day. “On behalf of the Conroe Family YMCA and of those that will benefit, I gratefully acknowledge the recent donation from Woodforest Charitable Foundation. Thank you so very much for your marvelous YMCA friendship and support,” said Mandy Stelzer, Community Executive Director of Conroe Family YMCA. The Willis Teen Center’s goal is to maximize opportunities for teens to achieve high self-esteem, confidence, healthy living, and learning through their after school program.
