PEORIA, IL – Peoria Area Food Bank recently received a $3,000 donation from Woodforest Charitable Foundation.

The Peoria Area Food Bank was formed in 1984 to help supplement the dietary and nutritional needs of low-income families throughout an eight county service area.  The Food Bank currently provides 120 active food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and senior housing with large quantities of food from name brand manufacturers and USDA commodities on a daily basis.

In 2009 the food bank distributed over 3,000,000 pounds of food; an increase of approximately 1.1 million pounds compared to 2008.  The Food Bank relies heavily on corporate manufacturers for food donations.  It also receives support from individuals and local businesses, and actively participates in the annual Peoria Area Anti-Hunger Coalition Can-a-thon and the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive.  “It’s organizations like the Woodforest Charitable Foundation that keep our food banks stocked with food and help us provide other programs that are essential to our communities,” said Barb Shreves, Director of Peoria Area Food Bank.  “We are extremely grateful for our partnership with the Foundation.”
