YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley receives $1,510 from Woodforest Charitable Foundation.

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley began in the early 1980s when a group of lay and religious community leaders realized that while people were going hungry, companies were throwing away unused but still nutritious edible food. Today, the Food Bank annually distributes 9 million pounds of food to 153 hunger relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.  Partner organizations include church pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, shelters for battered women, and after-school programs.

Currently, member agencies feed over 14,000 people in the tri-county area each week. To meet the growing need for food assistance, the Food Bank’s staff and numerous volunteers work to ensure that hungry seniors, families and children in the Mahoning Valley have the food they need to live healthy and productive lives. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $15 worth of food to pantries and soup kitchens.

In addition to food distribution, the Food Bank also offers a Back Pack Program designed to provide hungry children with food over weekends and school vacations. The Food Bank currently offers Back Pack Programs in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties that serve 300 students each week.  The cost per bag of food each week is calculated just under $8, and provides each child with six meals and two snacks.

“On behalf of our board of directors, staff, volunteers, member agencies and, most importantly, the children who will receive food, please accept our thanks for this gift and for your ongoing support. The BackPack program ensures that every Friday children are given a bag of nutritious, child friendly food to take home so they do not go hungry over the weekend,” said Michael Iberis, Executive Director of Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.
