ST. LOUIS, MO – St. Louis Area Foodbank recently received a $2,825 gift from Woodforest Charitable Foundation in support of their Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) serving Jackson, Madison, St. Clair and Williamson counties.

The CSFP is a federally funded program that works to improve the health of women, children under six years of age and senior citizens by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA commodity foods. National figures indicate that eighty percent of those served will be senior citizens. According to the USDA, these packages provide a good source of nutrients typically lacking in the diets of senior citizens.

The St. Louis Area Foodbank began its service to the community in 1975. In the first year, the Foodbank distributed 135,000 pounds of food. In 2011, more than 25 million pounds of food received from food companies and grocery stores, the USDA, Feeding America, and community food drives organized by area businesses, groups, and individuals was distributed to its large service area.

The mission of St. Louis Area Foodbank is to feed hungry people by distributing food through partner agencies, and educate the public about the nature of and solutions to the problems of hunger. The Foodbank also actively looks for ways to make sure food is reaching the people who need it most, including using Food Fairs, Mobile Markets, and the CSFP program.

In 2006, with the help of countless financial contributions, St. Louis Area Foodbank was able to purchase a new building.  The current facility has allowed the Foodbank to significantly increase the pounds of food distributed annually.  In addition, they can now store both frozen foods and produce on-site, along with the entire supply of dry product.  The new facility also has a terrific volunteer center, where thousands of community members gather each year to sort and re-package food for members of the community in need.
