GARY, IN – Food Bank of Northwest Indiana welcomes a $1,250 gift from Woodforest Charitable Foundation.

The funds will support the Food Bank’s BackPack Program for children at risk of hunger.  Founded in 1982, the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana acquires stores and distributes over 5.1 million pounds of food throughout Lake and Porter Counties each year.  The Food Bank is an affiliate of Feeding America and a USDA approved distributer of food to local pantries, shelters, day care centers and soup kitchens.

Food Bank of Northwest Indiana’s mission is to provide nutritional support to those in need of hunger relief through its network of 100 community agencies across Lake and Porter Counties, with the ongoing focus of ending hunger and helping individuals in the community move towards self-sufficiency.

“Through your support, you’re helping the Food Bank of Norwest Indiana provide food for those in need through our 5 child-focused sites and programs like Kids Café,” said Angie Williams, Executive Director of Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.

The Food Bank offers four major feeding programs in house. Kids Café provides free meals and snacks to low-income children through a variety of community locations where children already congregate, such as boys and girls clubs, churches, and schools. The BackPack Program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children at times when other resources are not available, such as weeks and school vacations. The Mobile Pantry Program serves as ways for the Food Bank to get out and directly interact with individuals in need. Trucks are loaded with goods and travel to distressed communities throughout Lake and Porter Counties to deliver food. The Food Rescue Program allows the Food Bank to visit local restaurants, buffets, caterers and other members of the hospitality industry to pick up unused food that may go to waste.

“You’re making a big difference in the fight against hunger, and helping prevent any child or struggling adult from suffering in our community,” said Williams.
