Founded in 1982, after the idea was brought to the region by United Way and Steelworker representatives, the organization began distributing salvaged food from a repurposed barn in Lake County. Its mission is “to feed people today, and end hunger tomorrow by inspiring and collaborating with our community,” with a vision of “a community free of hunger.” Serving Lake and Porter counties, the Food Bank equips more than 130 partner agencies to help 60,000+ individuals each month, distributing over 7–9 million pounds of food annually, enough to provide approximately 6 million meals per year. To meet diverse community needs with dignity, it operates innovative initiatives such as Mobile Market distributions, the Order-Ahead smart locker system, a Commodity Supplemental Food Program for seniors, BackPack meals for children, and Food Is Medicine partnerships.
