Woodforest Charitable Foundation

Founded in 1981–1982, a group of concerned citizens, including County Commissioner Bill Owens and 20 area churches, came together to launch what was then the Albemarle Food Bank. It started in a small warehouse and distributed approximately 133,000 meals in its first three years across 10 northeastern North Carolina counties. Its mission is to fight hunger and poverty in our 15‑county service area in northeast North Carolina, operating as a regional clearinghouse that collects and distributes food and grocery items to over 100 nonprofit and faith-based agencies, while also serving eligible individuals directly. Today, the Food Bank partners with more than 145 programs, including mobile pantries, SNAP outreach, teaching kitchens, and Backpack programs, to distribute millions of pounds of nutritious food annually. It aims to serve over 48,000 individuals each month, striving toward its vision of completely hunger‑free communities.
