Woodforest Charitable Foundation

The Freestore Foodbank was founded in 1971 by Frank Gerson in Cincinnati, Ohio, who began collecting and distributing usable household items, and soon food, from his apartment under the name “Free Store.” It was formally incorporated as a public charity and, by 1979, became a founding member of Feeding America, evolving into today’s Freestore Foodbank. Its mission is to improve lives by eliminating hunger in partnership with the community, with a vision of building a hunger‑free, healthy, and thriving community. To fulfill this, Freestore distributes nutritious food through over 600 partner agencies across 20 counties in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, and offers wrap‑around programs that connect clients to housing support, SNAP benefits, workforce development, healthcare enrollment, and financial counseling, ensuring food is just the beginning of a pathway from crisis to stability. Today, Freestore Foodbank provides approximately 47 million meals annually, serving hundreds of thousands of individuals with both emergency food and long-term support.
