INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana recently received a $4,170 check in support of their programs for children and seniors at risk of hunger.  Established in 1980, Gleaners’ mission is to end hunger by engaging individuals and communities to provide food for people in need.  The Food Bank works toward accomplishing this mission by securing, storing and redistributing donated food to more than 350 hunger relief agencies each year.

Gleaners Food Bank receives food and critical grocery items from more than 400 companies, organizations and individuals. Food donations include meat, fresh produce, dairy products, canned vegetables and personal care products.  As the largest food bank in Indiana, Gleaners has the ability to store frozen, refrigerated and non-refrigerated items before distribution to its 21 county region. More than 350 not-for-profit hunger relief agencies receive food and other items from Gleaners including food pantries, soup kitchens, and youth/senior centers.

Within Gleaners service area, 118,800 or 22% of children are deemed food insecure and don’t know when or where there next meal will come. To address this large need, the Food Bank offers many programs targeted at ending childhood hunger. Backsacks-Weekend Food is dedicated to improving the lives of Indiana children by providing a backpack full of kid-friendly, nutritious food to feed children on weekends. School-based pantries are in place offering staple grocery items, including basic hygienic products, available to students and their immediate family members at no cost. Gleaners also offers summer feeding programs aimed at keeping children from going hungry during school vacations. During the summer months, children can gather at one of the hundreds of various locations during the weekdays and experience a nutritious meal in a safe atmosphere that is convenient for them.

“We are humbled by the generosity of the Woodforest Charitable Foundation, the Bank’s employees, and the warm community spirit your people bring wherever they are located. Thanks to you, there will be hope and smiles from children who otherwise have little joy in their lives,” said Cynthia Hubert, President and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana.
