Woodforest Charitable Foundation donates $800 to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York

LATHAM, NY – The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York receives an $800 donation from Woodforest Charitable Foundation.  The funds will support the Food Bank’s BackPack Program.

Although free and reduced price breakfast and lunch programs provide significant nutritional benefits to children in school, there is evidence that many disadvantaged children do not receive sufficient food when school is not in session.  The mission of the BackPack Program is to help alleviate child hunger by providing hungry children with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends.  The program provides backpacks filled with food that is child-friendly, shelf-stable, and easily consumed.  These backpacks are discreetly distributed to the children on Friday afternoons.

“Food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters continue to serve record numbers of people in these difficult economic times,” said Mark Quandt, Executive Director of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York.  “However, with the financial support we receive from sources like Woodforest Charitable Foundation, we have been able to increase food donations, serve more agencies, expand our BackPack Program, and ultimately feed more hungry people at a time when help is desperately needed.  Thank you for giving us the opportunity to do so much more for those in need.”

The Regional Food Bank has been helping to feed the poor and hungry since 1982. It is the only organization of its kind in northeastern New York.  The Food Bank collects large donations of food from the food industry and distributes it to charitable agencies serving hungry and disadvantaged people in 23 counties.  From Plattsburgh to Newburgh, in urban, rural, and suburban communities, the Food Bank provides over 20 million pounds of food a year to 1,000 agencies.
