Greater Chicago Food Depository recently received a $500.00 donation from The Woodforest Charitable Foundation.

Woodforest Charitable Foundation

Founded in 1979 by a group of six civic and faith leaders. The Greater Chicago Food Depository became the first food bank in Illinois. Starting operations at a produce stall in Chicago’s South Water Market, it distributed approximately 471,000 pounds of food to 85 agencies in its inaugural year. Its mission is to end hunger by partnering with community-based organizations and individuals to connect neighbors with healthy food, lift voices, and advance solutions that address hunger’s root causes like poverty, systemic inequity, and structural racism. Today, it serves Cook County through a network of about 700 partner food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and mobile programs, distributing over 100 million meals annually, while also operating educational programs like culinary job training, mobile markets, nutrition education, and veteran and senior outreach.
