Woodforest Charitable Foundation

The Capital Area Food Bank was officially incorporated on January 15, 1980, chosen to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday; it was founded by the Interfaith Conference and the United Planning Organization in response to cuts in the federal Food Stamp Program. Its mission is to help our neighbors thrive by creating more equitable access to food and opportunity through community partnerships, rooted in a vision where everyone has access to sufficient, nutritious food. Today, the food bank distributes food for nearly 50 million meals annually across Washington, DC; Northern Virginia; and parts of Maryland, working with over 400 local nonprofit partners to deliver not just food, but nutrition education, wellness programs, and advocacy services that help address the underlying causes of hunger.
