Formed after the tragic starvation death of nine-year-old Bobby Ellis on Thanksgiving Eve in 1969, Dare to Care was established to ensure that no community member goes without enough food to live an active, healthy life. Today, serving 13 counties across Kentucky and southern Indiana, Dare to Care partners with over 300 local agencies, pantries, shelters, and kitchens. To distribute more than 21‑22 million meals annually and several million pounds of fresh produce. Its mission is “to lead our community to feed the hungry and conquer the cycle of need”, now updated to emphasize collaborative innovation under the statement: “working together to provide pathways to end hunger in our community”. Dare to Care’s programs, including Kids Café and School Pantries for children, Mobile Pantries and Senior Outreach for isolated neighborhoods, Prescriptive Pantries at health clinics, Cooking Matters nutrition education, and Summer Meals, are designed to deliver dignity and nutritious food while addressing systemic hunger and health challenges.
