First Light Mission began in October 1995, after a family arrived at a local church with nowhere to stay. A group of local pastors adopted the Interfaith Hospitality Network model and began hosting families in rotating church spaces for over two decades. In the wake of COVID-19 disruptions and a strategic rebrand, the organization adopted the name First Light Mission, reflecting its identity as “a place of refuge and fresh starts”. Its mission is to offer those experiencing homelessness stable emergency shelter, access to housing programs, and the resources they need to achieve their full potential, encapsulated in their tagline: “a place of refuge and fresh starts”. Operating at a permanent facility on Wilkinson Street since 2022, First Light provides 24/7 shelter for single women and families, comprehensive case management, and individualized development plans designed to support residents in finding longer-term housing and stability.
