ELMIRA, NY – Food Bank of the Southern Tier welcomes a $265 donation from Woodforest Charitable Foundation.

The Food Bank’s network of over 180 hunger-relief agencies includes food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, residential programs, day care programs, senior feeding programs, and other not-for-profit organizations located throughout a six county service area.

Over 35,000 children across the Southern Tier receive free or reduced-price meals at school. When shool is not in session over weekend and long breaks, many of those children do not have access to enough nutritious food to adequately support their physical and cognitive development. Through the BackPack Program, the Food Bank provides much needed relief to children at greatest risk of experiencing hunger in the home.

During the 2011-2012 school year, the Food Bank distributed 61,000 packs of nutritious, child-friendly, easy-to-prepare food each Friday and before long school breaks to more than 1,800 children identified as at-risk of hunger. The backpack program is available in 26 school districts and several new civic/community groups and faith-based organizations helping address child hunger. Food Bank of the Southern Tier has a goal to expand this program to all 41 school districts, eventually serving 3,500 children weekly by 2019. By achieving this goal, it will allow the program to serve approximately 10% of children eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.

“We are grateful for the continued support of our children who are most at risk of hunger over the weekends when school is not in session. We are proud to partner with you in this endeavor and look forward to working with you again in the future,” said Valerie Rosplock, Corporate and Foundation Manager of Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
