Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank was founded in 1983 amid the collapse of Pittsburgh’s steel economy, when soaring unemployment created an urgent need for hunger relief. The organization opened its first facility in Duquesne in 2000—a renovated former steel‑mill site that became the first LEED‑certified food bank building in the U.S. Its mission is to leverage the power of community to achieve lasting solutions to hunger and its root causes, and its vision is communities where everyone has access to the food and resources they need to thrive. Serving 11 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, the Food Bank partners with over 1,000 agencies, including pantries, shelters, schools, libraries, churches, and hospitals, to distribute millions of nutritious meals annually and support long‑term stability through nutrition education, advocacy, and community engagement. Beyond food distribution, the Food Bank also operates "The Market", a grocery‑style on‑site pantry open to the public, and supports programs like SNAP outreach, mobile markets, and child‑nutrition initiatives. Through these efforts, it aims not only to alleviate hunger but to build healthier, more resilient communities across the region.
